Tragic Details Emerge in Vietnamese Persecution

Vietnamese authorities ordered the Con Dau village, near the city of Da Nang, to be abandoned to build a resort on the site. When the people resisted water irrigation was shut off to the rice fields, cutting the main source of income and food. On May 4, 2010, Vietnamese police surrounded and attacked a funeral as it approached the cemetery. Police arrested and beat 62 persons including women that were stripped naked and beaten. One pregnant woman, Le Thi Van, was struck in her stomach until she had a miscarriage.

HANOI — Blogger Nguyen Hue Chi is locked in an electronic game of cat and mouse with a mystery cyberattacker -- widely believed to be the government. Chi and his colleagues have set up a series of websites and blogs questioning government policy in the past year, only to see them attacked and blocked. Observers blame the communist state, which they say has adopted a more aggressive stance towards politically sensitive Internet sites.

Search giant Google has expressed concern over new regulations that will allow the Vietnamese government to block access to websites and monitor the activity of Internet users. The decision, made at the end of April, affects commercial Internet access points in Hanoi city and could include cafes, hotels, restaurants and public transport terminals.

IDG News Service - Human rights activists are worried that new software mandated by Vietnamese authorities may lead to an Internet clampdown in the country's largest city. In April, local officials issued new regulations covering Internet cafes and service providers in Hanoi, ostensibly designed to crack down on hacking and other service abuses. Buried in the regulations is a mandate that service providers must add special software to their domain servers, used to authenticate systems on the network.
