Vietnamese dissident near death
One of nine Vietnamese dissidents sentenced to prison in early October remains on hunger strike and may be near death, his wife said after visiting him. Vu Van Hung, a 43-year-old high school teacher, was sentenced to three years in prison and three years of probation on October 7 for hanging a banner advocating multiparty democracy from a Hanoi overpass in August 2008.
 
Bishop of Vinh Long protests over the demolition of a convent
Vinh Long (AsiaNews) – The Bishop of Vinh Long has protested once again for the demolition of the convent of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres to make way for a public square. In a letter dated 28 October addressed to priests, religious and faithful, Mgr. Thomas Nguyen Van Tan complains, in particular, the start of the demolition – of which h was informed by the newspapers - took place despite the diocese and the congregation having lodged protests against the initiative.

H. Res. 672 Calls on Vietnamese Government to Respect Internet Freedom
Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez (CA-47) today applauded House passage of House Resolution 672, legislation that she authored calling for greater internet freedom in Vietnam.  The Rep. Sanchez-sponsored resolution supports the right of Vietnam's citizens to access websites of their choosing and to have the freedom to share and publish information over the Internet.  It also calls on the Government of Vietnam to repeal its laws restricting free speech and release all political prisoners, including bloggers and cyber activists who use the Internet to express their views.

Liên quan tới việc 9 nhà hoạt động dân chủ bị kết án tù vì tội gọi là “vi phạm Điều 88 Bộ Luật Hình sự Việt Nam”, các hãng thông tấn AFP và DPA cho biết nhà giáo Vũ Hùng, một trong 9 người bị tuyên án tù hồi tuần trước, đang tuyệt thực để phản đối bản án.

US 'disturbed' by jailing of Vietnam activists
The United States embassy said Wednesday it was "deeply disturbed" by the convictions last week of nine Vietnamese democracy activists despite Vietnam's international commitments to uphold human rights.

Hôm thứ Năm, một tòa án ở Hà Nội đã kết án một nhà hoạt động dân chủ 4 năm tù giam và 4 năm quản chế vì có các bài viết cổ xúy dân chủ và đa đảng. Trong khi 6 nhân vật bất đồng chính kiến khác đã bị đưa ra xét xử ở Hải Phòng vì tội treo các biểu ngữ cổ xúy dân chủ và rải truyền đơn cũng như bày tỏ chính kiến trên mạng Internet.
 
Nhà giáo Vũ Hùng bị kết án 3 năm tù
Một tòa án Việt Nam đã tuyên án một nhà giáo 3 năm tù giam và 3 năm quản chế hôm thứ Tư, về tội treo biểu ngữ trên một cây cầu, kêu gọi dân chủ đa nguyên.

Ông Vũ Hùng là thầy giáo môn Vật Lý, 43 tuổi, là một trong 9 người có liên hệ với Khối 8406, một nhóm vận động cho dân chủ bị nhà nước Việt Nam cấm hoạt động.

I call on the communist authorities of Vietnam for an immediate release of Mr Nguyen Van Ly, also known as Father Thaddeus, a 63 year old Roman Catholic priest and a prominent Vietnamese dissident imprisoned many times for a total of almost 15 years. He has been involved in many pro-democracy movements and non-violent protests. Since 1983 he has been recognised by Amnesty International as a prisoner of conscience. He is one of 10 candidates for the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought 2009, discerned by the European Parliament.
